On the Relevance of Freehand Gestures for Peripheral Interaction
نویسنده
چکیده
Interactions in the visual and attentional periphery can help to perform secondary tasks without an attention shift away from the primary task. In this paper, I define freehand gestures as imprecise moments towards any device or object in the periphery of a user. This kind of gesture can be interpreted by the device and understood as an attempt for activation or deactivation. The interaction can be performed eyes-free, which is an advantage compared to controlling haptic elements such as buttons. The paper will provide example usecases, advantages and constraints of the approach as well as issues I would like to discuss at the workshop with experts on the field of peripheral interaction.

A Framework of Freehand Gesture Interaction: Techniques, Guidelines, and Applications
Freehand gestures have long been considered to potentially deliver natural, intuitive, terse but powerful human-computer interaction techniques. Over years, researchers have been attempting to employ freehand gestures as an alternative input modality to the conventional devices (e.g. keyboard and mouse) in a wide array of application domains, and a huge number of gesture recognition systems and...
متن کاملHuman Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition
With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

متن کاملComparing Input Modalities for Peripheral Interaction: A Case Study on Peripheral Music Control
In graphical user interfaces, every application usually asks for the user’s full attention during interaction with it. Even marginal side activities often force the user to switch windows, which results in attention shifts and increased cognitive load. Peripheral interaction addresses this problem by providing input facilities in the periphery of the user’s attention by relying on divided atten...
متن کاملTraveller: An Interactive Cultural Training System Controlled by User-Defined Body Gestures
In this paper, we describe a cultural training system based on an interactive storytelling approach and a culturally-adaptive agent architecture, for which a user-defined gesture set was created. 251 full body gestures by 22 users were analyzed to find intuitive gestures for the in-game actions in our system. After the analysis we integrated the gestures in our application using our framework f...
